With a PACS, there was a rapid decrease in unit cost per study because equipment costs for the system were xed and did not increase substantially with added volume. At a volume of 90,000 studies per year, there was an approximately 25% savings in cost per unit study with a PACS compared with lm. The breakeven point between lm-based and lmless operation occurred at approximately 39,000 studies a year. At volumes greater than that, the study found lmless operation to be more cost-effective than a conventional department operation.
